A dumbwaiter is a small freight elevator or lift intended to carry food. Dumbwaiters found within modern structures, including both commercial, public and private buildings, are often connected between multiple floors.Etymology. From dumb (“unable to speak”) +‎ waiter, originally separate words and describing the portable table's inability to relate gossip after the meal. By the use of the term to describe small service elevators in American homes in the 1840s, it simply meant dumb as “mechanical”, “unable to speak at all”.A dumbwaiter consists of a car enclosed in a shaft and suspended by ropes or chains from a pulley or pulleys above, so that it may be raised or lowered by means of a hand rope. The car is counterbalanced by adjustable iron weights (similar to the sashes in a double-hung window).
