Description

Gear hobbing is the most popular and widely preferred machining process for gear manufacturing. In this technique, a gear tooth is machined with combined and repetitive motion of a workpiece and cutting tool. Both, a workpiece and cutter continuously rotate in a synchronized motion.Gear manufacturing can be divided into two categories namely forming and machining as shown in flow chart in Fig 5.1. Forming consists of direct casting, molding, drawing, or extrusion of tooth forms in molten, powdered, or heat softened materials and machining involves roughing and finishing operations. All gearboxes operate on a similar principle: the direction in which the gears rotate depends on the input direction and orientation of the gears. For example, if the initial gear is rotating in a clockwise direction, the gear it engages will rotate counterclockwise. This continues down the line for multiple gears.
