Description

Hardening is physiological process .Plants accumulate more carbohydrates reserves and produce additional quiticle on the leaves. In this processPlants raised indoors or in a greenhouse need to be acclimatised to cooler temperatures, lower humidity and increased air movement for about two to three weeks before they are planted outdoors. This 'toughening up' process is known as hardening off.The hardening phase creates a controlled amount of stress for the plants while they are still in the nursery, helping the plants to survive the stresses of handling and shipping and acclimating them to the conditions of the outplanting site (figure 15.2B).Hardening is the process of exposing transplants (seedlings) gradually to outdoor conditions. It enables your transplants to withstand the changes in environmental conditions they will face when planted outside in the garden. It encourages a change from soft, succulent growth to a firmer, harder growth
