A welding electrode is a piece of wire or rod, which can be of metal or alloy and has a flux with or without flux and carries an electric current to obtain sufficient heat for welding. Once the molten metal is exposed to the environment, it absorbs oxygen and nitrogen which affect adversely and become brittle. A slag blanket would have to cover molten/ solidifying weld metal to shield from the atmosphere and electrode coating provides us with this shield.
