Praziquantel is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic that acts directly on the parasite's cell membrane, causing severe muscle contraction and paralysis in the worm. This disrupts the parasite's ability to maintain its position within the host's body, allowing it to be dislodged and expelled or destroyed by the immune system. Unlike anthelmintics that only target intestinal worms, Praziquantel is effective against a range of trematodes (flukes) and cestodes (tapeworms), including those causing schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, and various tapeworm infections such as taeniasis and cysticercosis.

It is commonly prescribed for schistosomiasis (a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes, prevalent in certain tropical and subtropical regions), liver and lung fluke infections, and tapeworm infections affecting the intestines or, in more serious cases, tissues such as the brain (neurocysticercosis) under close medical supervision. The tablet is typically taken with food to improve tolerability and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort, with dosing based on body weight and the specific parasitic infection being treated, as determined by the physician.
