Description
A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility designed to treat and process domestic and commercial wastewater (sewage) so that the discharged effluent meets environmental standards before being released into natural water bodies, reused, or safely disposed. The treatment process is typically carried out in three stages: Primary Treatment Removal of large solids, grit, and floating matter through screening and sedimentation. Reduces suspended solids and some organic load. Secondary Treatment (Biological Treatment) Involves microbial action to break down dissolved organic matter (BOD, COD). Processes include Activated Sludge Process (ASP), Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR), or Membrane Bioreactor (MBR). Effluent is clarified to remove biomass (sludge). Tertiary Treatment (Polishing) Advanced treatment to meet stringent standards. May include filtration, disinfection (UV/Chlorination/Ozone), nutrient removal (N, P), activated carbon, or membrane filtration. Produces treated water suitable for discharge or reuse (gardening, flushing, cooling towers, etc.).
